History of Liverpool Airport

Liverpool (Speke) Airport, as it was then known, was constructed in part on the grounds of Speke Hall. Regular flights began in 1930 with a service by Imperial Airways to Croydon Airport in London via Barton Aerodrome near Eccles, Salford, and Castle Bromwich Aerodrome in Birmingham. On July 1, 1933, the airport opened to the public.

The demand for flights across the Irish Sea from Liverpool took off in the late 1930s. There includes a unique terminal for passengers, a control tower, and two massive hangars for planes.

A 999-year lease on between 70 and 110 acres of Liverpool City Council's Speke Estate was granted to the Air Ministry at the start of 1937. Speke Airport, located next to the shadow factory, is included in the purchase price as needed. A siding was made available by the LMS Railway.

Construction was expected to take 30 weeks, and once finished, over 5,000 people will have jobs in the skyscraper. Rootes Securities was tasked with overseeing it on behalf of the Air Ministry.

Speke was requisitioned by the Royal Air Force and became RAF Speke during World War II. Rootes produced 1,070 bombers for the British Air Force out of Bristol Blenheims in a "shadow factory" near the airport.

Many planes, including Hudsons and Mustang fighters, were assembled at the airport by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation after being delivered from the United States in pieces to Liverpool Docks. There was also a Merchant Ship Fighter Unit based out of the airfield.
